Avoiding Summer Heat — Cooling Without Air Conditioning
How to keep your home comfortably cool with insulation, shading, and smart ventilation — no AC needed.
Why Heat Protection Is Becoming More Important
Summers are getting hotter. In Siegen, temperatures above 38°C were recorded for the first time in 2024. Attic apartments become saunas in summer, bedrooms are unbearable at night. Many turn to air conditioning — but that drives up electricity costs and CO₂ emissions.
💡 Fact: A portable AC unit uses 800–1,200 kWh per summer — that's €250–400 in electricity and 350–500 kg CO₂. Structural heat protection uses zero energy.
Measure #1: External Sun Protection
The single most effective measure against overheating. External sun protection blocks solar radiation before it enters through the glass — far more effective than internal blinds or curtains.
External Blinds / Venetian Shutters
Reduction: 70–80%Adjustable slats, usable even in wind. Retrofittable on almost any window. Cost: €300–600 per window.
Roller Shutters
Reduction: 60–75%Often already present. Easy to use, but no daylight when closed. Motorization retrofittable.
Awnings
Reduction: 60–70%Ideal for balconies and terraces. Also protect the room behind. Cost: €500–2,000 depending on size.
⚠️ Internal curtains or blinds only achieve 15–25% reduction. The solar radiation is already inside and converts to heat.
Measure #2: Roof Insulation as Heat Shield
What keeps warmth inside in winter keeps heat outside in summer. Good roof insulation is the best heat protection for attics — often underestimated because people only think about winter.
- Uninsulated roofAttic reaches 40–50°C in summer. Heat penetrates within minutes.
- With 20 cm insulationAttic temperature stays 8–12°C cooler. Heat only arrives in the evening — when you can already ventilate.
- Phase shiftCrucial for summer comfort: How long until heat penetrates? Wood fiber insulation has the best phase shift at 10–14 hours — mineral wool only 3–5 hours.
Measure #3: Using Night Ventilation Effectively
The simplest and free measure: Use the cool night air to cool down the building. Keep windows closed during the day.
Evening to morning
Open all windows wide from about 9 PM. Ideally create cross-ventilation — open opposing windows for airflow.
Closed during the day
Close all windows from about 8 AM and activate sun protection. The cool night air stays stored in the building.
Use thermal mass
Heavy building elements (concrete, brick, screed) store nighttime coolness and release it during the day. That's why old buildings often feel cooler than lightweight constructions.
Measure #4: Windows with Solar Control Glass
When replacing windows on south and west facades, solar control glass is worthwhile. It significantly reduces solar heat gain (g-value) while still allowing daylight through.

Heat Protection per GModG: What's Required?
The GModG (formerly GEG) requires in §14 proof of summer heat protection per DIN 4108-2. For new builds and major renovations, it must be proven that indoor temperatures don't exceed a limit in summer.
💡 Tip: Even without a legal obligation — summer heat protection significantly increases living comfort and property value. It should be considered in every renovation.
