We hear it regularly in consultations: “If I install triple-glazed windows, I’ll get mold!” The thinking behind it: Old buildings need leaky spots to breathe. Modern windows are too airtight and moisture can’t escape anymore.
This prejudice is persistent — but in most cases wrong. Buildings don’t “breathe” through leaky windows. That was never a sensible ventilation strategy, just uncontrolled energy loss.
Why Triple Glazing Works in Old Buildings
1. Better U-Value = Less Heat Loss
The U-value describes how much heat escapes through the window. The lower, the better:

With triple-glazed windows, the inner pane stays warm. Condensation on the window becomes a thing of the past. The solution for moisture isn’t a leaky gap, but proper ventilation — ideally supported by a mechanical ventilation system.
3. Better Sound Insulation Included
An often overlooked benefit: Triple-glazed windows insulate against noise significantly better than old windows. Street noise, neighbors, aircraft — living comfort noticeably improves. Especially in old buildings, where sound insulation was often neglected, this makes a big difference.
4. Solar Gains Are Preserved
Another prejudice: Triple glazing lets in less solar warmth. True — but the effect is minimal. Modern triple-glazed windows have a g-value of about 0.50–0.55 (double: about 0.60–0.65). The lower solar gain is more than compensated by the significantly better insulation.
What to Watch Out for During Installation
Proper Connection Details
The connection between window frame and masonry must be airtight and thermal-bridge-free. That means: tight on the inside, vapor-open on the outside. This is where most mistakes happen — and where you see if the installer knows their craft.
Ventilation Concept
When old, leaky windows are replaced with tight ones, ventilation habits must be adjusted. Opening windows fully 3–4 times a day is usually sufficient. Even better: a decentralized ventilation system with heat recovery — costing about €800–1,500 per room and saving additional heating energy.
Check Reveal Width
Triple-glazed windows are slightly wider than old ones (about 80mm glass build-up vs. 24mm for single glazing). In most old buildings, the reveal is wide enough. Your window installer or energy consultant checks this on-site.
When Double Glazing Instead?
In rare cases, double glazing may make more sense: for example with listed buildings with very narrow profiles, or when the exterior wall has a U-value above 1.5 W/m²K with no insulation planned. In all other cases, triple glazing is the better investment — the price difference to double is only about 10–15%.
