Massive walls (often 40–60 cm) but virtually no insulation. Single glazing, damp basements, high ceilings. In Siegerland, often slate facades with half-timbering behind.

Significantly better insulated due to Thermal Protection Regulation 1977/1982, but still insufficient by today's standards. Typical: gas central heating, insulated glazing (U-value approx. 2.8–3.0), 6–8 cm facade insulation.

The Siegerland Factor

Siegerland sits higher and is colder than the Rhine plain or the Ruhr area. Average heating degree days are about 10–15% higher than in Cologne or Düsseldorf.
